I found tests to be a good indicator of where I was at over homework.

Joseph from Winter 2023

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

I really enjoyed the culture class trips, despite having to get up early on a Saturday, they always ended up being fun and helped me make friends with other classmates.

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

Being able to consult with teachers anytime was really nice and helped me shape what I want to do in Japan. Theres also teachers in training, and they're always around to talk to in breaks and after class.

What activities or materials did you find most helpful (e.g., pair work, drill practice, tests, small group sessions, textbooks, games)?

I found tests to be a good indicator of where I was at over homework. The homework only covered one topic usually, but tests would cover a wider variety of them mixed around. I've never studied Japanese from a textbook in this style, so the textbooks have been extremely helpful in visualizing Japanese grammar points.

What did you find most valuable in the Culture Course?

There were a lot of real life things learned, we went to the Disaster Prevention center and got to learn about things that I don't think exist in the US for safety measures, and what to do in case of an earthquake which is something that simply doesn't happen in Ohio. There were also a lot of historical locations we went to, and I love Japanese history, so I enjoyed that a lot.

Any comments or tips for prospective/new KCP students?

You only get the one semester to do the Culture classes, so if something seems interesting, commit to it while you can. Also make sure you wait to get a train pass until you can get the student discount.

Testimonials

Choosing KCP was largely to do with the ease of application. A lot of other summer courses required a lot of paperwork and recommendations and transcripts that are a big pain to gather. But KCP’s application process was very easy and self-explanatory! Also, the student life photos looked interesting!
